Ubiquiti Accessories: PoE, Fiber Converters and Protection

Ubiquiti offers a wide range of accessories aimed at increasing the reliability, flexibility and protection of network installations. From power supply to fiber conversion and surge protection - these components are essential for professional (outdoor) installations.

1. PoE Injectors (Power over Ethernet Adapters)

PoE injectors provide non-PoE capable switches with the ability to power compatible devices (such as UniFi Access Points or AirMAX radios) via the Ethernet cable.

Model TypeStandard/VoltagePowerSpeedApplication
U-POE-af802.3af (Active)max. 15WGigabitStandard PoE for most UniFi devices.
U-POE-at802.3at (PoE+)max. 30WGigabitFor more power-hungry devices (e.g. UniFi Pro APs).
POE-24-xxW-G24V Passive PoEVariableGigabitNecessary for older or specific AirMAX/EdgeMAX devices.

Important: Ubiquiti uses both active standards (802.3af/at) and proprietary passive PoE (usually 24V or 48V). Always make sure that the injector matches the device to avoid damage. Many models offer integrated protection against electrostatic discharge (ESD) in connection with grounded Ubiquiti cables (UISP Cable).

2. Instant PoE Converter (INS-3AF-I-G / INS-8023AF-O)

The Instant PoE Converter is a clever solution for compatibility between older hardware and modern PoE switches.

  • Function: It converts the active PoE standard 802.3af (48V) of a modern switch into the 24V Passive PoE required by many older Ubiquiti devices.
  • Advantage: It allows 24V devices to be operated directly via a standard PoE switch without having to use a separate 24V PoE injector, which simplifies management and cable routing.
  • Models: Indoor and weatherproof outdoor versions are available.

3. F-POE-Gen2 (Fiber PoE Gen 2)

The F-POE-Gen2 is a versatile media converter that overcomes the limits of copper cabling (100 meters) through the use of fiber optics.

  • Media Conversion: Converts a fiber optic signal (via SFP module) into a copper Ethernet signal.
  • PoE Injection: Injects 24V or 50V passive PoE
  • into the Ethernet line via the DC terminal block or the RJ45 port itself to supply remote devices such as AirMAX radios.
  • Protection: Provides excellent ESD and EMI protection as the fiber optic line itself does not conduct electrical interference. Perfect for the end of a long fiber optic path.

4. ETH-SP-G2 (Ethernet Surge Protector Gen 2)

The ETH-SP-G2 is an essential surge protector for all Ethernet devices installed outdoors.

  • Purpose: It safely dissipates harmful surges and electrostatic discharges (ESD), typically caused by lightning strikes or static charge, into the ground before they can damage the connected electronics.
  • Compatibility: Supports speeds up to 1 Gbps and is compatible with all PoE standards (active and passive).
  • Installation: Must be installed between the outdoor device and the indoor device (e.g. switch or PoE injector) and properly grounded.
