Ubiquiti UFiber SFP Modules: Fiber Connectivity and GPON Solutions

The Ubiquiti UFiber product line offers a comprehensive range of SFP and SFP+ transceiver modules that are essential for high-speed fiber optic connections and the implementation of complete GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network) infrastructures. These modules enable the expansion of Ubiquiti devices such as UniFi Switches, EdgeRouters, and UFiber OLTs (Optical Line Terminals) with the necessary fiber optic interface.

1. Classic 1G/10G SFP and SFP+ Modules

These modules are used to establish classic Point-to-Point (PtP) fiber optic links between switches or routers.

Special Copper Transceivers

In addition to pure fiber optic modules, Ubiquiti also offers copper transceivers (e.g., UF-RJ45-1G and UF-RJ45-10G). These modules allow the conversion of an SFP/SFP+ port into a standard RJ45 Ethernet port to utilize existing copper cabling (Cat5e/Cat6) in a fiber optic switch.

2. UFiber GPON OLT SFP Modules (Class B+ and C+)

These modules are the heart of building fiber access networks (FTTH – Fiber-to-the-Home) according to the GPON standard. They are inserted into the UFiber OLT (Optical Line Terminal) switches and communicate asymmetrically with customer end devices (CPEs/ONUs).

• GPON Standard: Complies with ITU-T G.984 with asymmetrical data rates (typically 2.488 Gbps downstream / 1.244 Gbps upstream).
• Compatibility: Designed exclusively for use with Ubiquiti UFiber OLTs.
• Class B+ (UF-GP-B+):
  • Performance: The standard GPON class with an optical power budget that enables a link range of up to 20 km at a maximum split ratio (typ. 1:32 or 1:64).
  • Transmit Power (TX): 1.5 to 5 dBm.
• Class C+ (UF-GP-C+):
  • Performance: Provides a higher optical power budget. This is beneficial to support a larger number of customers (higher split ratio), longer distances up to 20 km with better signal margin, or both simultaneously.
  • Transmit Power (TX): 3 to 7 dBm (higher than Class B+).
    
    

3. UFiber Instant (UF-Instant) - GPON CPE in SFP Format

The UFiber Instant is an innovative solution. It is a complete GPON customer end device (CPE/ONU) in the form of an SFP module.

• Form Factor: SFP module.
• Function: It is plugged into a standard SFP slot of any device (e.g., UniFi Switch or EdgeRouter) and provides the downstream switch port with the 1 Gbps Ethernet connection it generates from the GPON signal.
• Advantage: Eliminates the need for an external ONT (Optical Network Terminal) and ensures a very clean and compact installation at the customer site.
