Ubiquiti ETH-SP-G2: The Bodyguard for Your Hardware
Any device mounted outdoors is vulnerable to voltage spikes. It doesn't even have to be a direct lightning strike – a nearby storm or dry wind can build up static charges that travel down the network cable straight into your expensive server room or living room switch.
The ETH-SP-G2 prevents this. It acts as a barrier.
How It Works
Inside, Gas Discharge Tubes (GDT) are at work. As soon as the voltage on the cable exceeds a critical value (approx. 90V), the tube ignites and diverts the energy instantly via the grounding cable before it reaches the sensitive chip of your router.
No Brake on Your Network
Many cheap surge protectors throttle speeds to 100 Mbps.
The ETH-SP-G2 is fully Gigabit capable. It protects all 8 pins of the network cable and lets PoE (Power over Ethernet) pass through unimpeded. You can use it without issues for high-performance antennas like the airFiber 5XHD or 4K cameras.
Installation Tip
For maximum protection, Ubiquiti recommends using two units:
1. One near the antenna (diverts static build-up from the air).
2. One just before entering the building (protects the indoor switch).
Important: The protection only works if the included grounding wire is connected to a proper ground (potential equalization bar or mast ground)!
