The Pigtail for Pro Makers and Industry
Building your own router? Want to equip your Raspberry Pi with an external antenna? Or does your industrial PC have poor reception inside its metal case?
Then you need this cable. It brings the high-frequency signal from the board to the outside.
Connector Basics: What is What?
The biggest problem with pigtails is mixing up connectors.
* Side A (PCB): The U.FL (or IPEX) plug is tiny (approx. 3mm diameter) and "clicks" onto the board.
* Side B (Antenna): The RP-SMA Jack has an external thread and a hole in the center (no pin!). This is the standard for Wi-Fi.
(Note: Do not confuse with SMA, which is used in cellular/LTE and has a pin).
Quality Makes the Difference: RG-178
Many cheap pigtails use extremely thin 1.13mm cables. These kink easily and have high attenuation.
We use RG-178 here. The cable has a brown, transparent jacket, is thermally more resilient, and mechanically much more stable. At 25cm length, you get less signal loss and a longer lifespan, even if it gets tight and warm inside the case.
Mounting
Thanks to the long thread on the RP-SMA jack, the lock washer, and the nut, you can install this cable perfectly into chassis walls, slot brackets, or front panels. Simply drill a hole (approx. 6.5mm), push it through, screw it tight – done.
