Ubiquiti airFiber 5: The Gigabit Backhaul
The airFiber 5 is not a standard WiFi bridge, but carrier-class hardware. It is designed to replace fiber optic cables over the air.
Powered by Ubiquiti's custom INVICTUS™ core processor, this system processes over 1 million packets per second. The goal: A stable connection that feels like a cable.
1.2 Gbps Aggregate – What does that mean?
The AF-5 achieves "1.2+ Gbps" according to the datasheet. Important to know: This is the sum of upload and download.
Thanks to HDD (Hybrid Division Duplexing), it can transmit and receive simultaneously. In practice, you achieve a full Gigabit connection (e.g., ~600 Mbps out and ~600 Mbps back), which perfectly maxes out the built-in Gigabit LAN port.
Revolutionary Design: Separate TX/RX
Look at the front: It's split.
The AF-5 uses an isolated reflector antenna just for transmitting and a second one just for receiving. This solves the biggest problem of conventional radios: Your own transmission signal does not interfere with reception.
Together with xRT (eXtended Range Technology), this enables stable links over distances where other systems fail.
Precision Mounting
The device is massive (16 kg!) and heavy. The included mount is therefore extremely robust and allows for precise alignment. An integrated display on the back shows you the signal strength (RSSI) directly while aiming – saving you from constantly checking the laptop.
