Ready-made all-in-one devices are convenient but often reach their limits in specific projects. The MikroTik BaseBox 5 puts you back in control. Via the two RP-SMA connectors on top, you decide what your Wi-Fi network looks like. Attach a powerful sector antenna to cover an entire marina, or use a huge parabolic dish to build a gigabit bridge over many kilometers. The BaseBox delivers the concentrated 5 GHz power (802.11a/n) to make it happen.
The Secret Under the Hood
Opening the bottom of the weatherproof enclosure reveals the true strength of this device: It is extremely expandable! There, you will find not only the Gigabit PoE input but also a free miniPCIe slot and a USB 2.0 port.
Need a base station that transmits simultaneously on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz? Simply plug a second Wi-Fi card into the slot! Need a standalone base station with a cellular connection in the middle of nowhere? Install a 3G/4G/LTE modem! (Note: The enclosure already has pre-drilled holes ready for three additional external antenna connectors).
Weatherproof and Well Thought-Out
Despite all these modular possibilities, the BaseBox 5 is designed for tough everyday outdoor use. Cables are routed in from below and effectively protected from moisture by a special hood. The enclosure can be easily opened with one hand, making work high up on the mast much easier. Power is conventionally supplied via Passive PoE over the network cable.
