Updated: May 17, 2026 | Reading time: approx. 3 minutes

Here is a brief guide on using a 3G/UMTS USB modem with the ALFA R36 router (using a Klarmobil modem as an example).

1. Hardware Connection and Login

Connect the 3G/UMTS USB modem to the USB port of the ALFA R36 and power on the router. Connect to the R36 using a network cable or WiFi. By default, the R36 broadcasts an open WiFi network named "ALFA_AP".

Open a web browser and enter the IP address of the ALFA R36 (Default: 192.168.2.1). The default username and password are both admin.

2. Configure WAN Settings

In the configuration interface, navigate to "Advanced" and then to "WAN".

If you have disabled the PIN code for this SIM card, you can often leave the 3G settings as they are. If the card is protected by a PIN, check the box next to "Enable" and enter the PIN code for your SIM card.

Click "Apply" and wait for the device to restart. After this, you should have an active internet connection.

3. Secure Your WiFi

After completing the setup, make sure to secure the ALFA R36 WiFi network using WPA2-PSK encryption. Go to "Advanced", then "Wireless", followed by "Security" to set your password.

FAQ: ALFA R36 with 3G Dongle

Which 3G dongle can I use with the ALFA R36?

The ALFA R36 supports many common 3G/UMTS modems (e.g., from Huawei). Always check the manufacturer’s compatibility list before purchasing a dongle.

Why is my dongle not recognized?

This is usually due to incorrect APN settings or an active SIM PIN lock. Try disabling the PIN lock using a mobile phone or manually entering your provider’s APN credentials.
