Ubiquiti INS-3AF-O-G: 24V Devices on a 48V Switch
Many WISP operators and admins know the dilemma: The new UniFi switch in the basement delivers 48V, but the wireless antenna on the roof (e.g., LiteBeam AC) needs 24V.
The INS-3AF-O-G not only solves this problem but actually improves the physics of your installation.
The Voltage Trick
Power loses voltage over long cables (voltage drop). At 24V, this loss is much more noticeable than at 48V.
When you use this adapter, the switch sends 48 Volts up the long cable (up to 100m). Only at the top, right before the antenna, does the adapter convert the voltage to 24 Volts.
The result: Your antenna gets stable power, even if the cable is very long. Without the adapter, feeding 24V from the bottom might result in only 18V arriving at the top, leading to crashes.
Weatherproof and Robust
Unlike the indoor version, this stick is completely sealed and withstands rain, snow, and temperature fluctuations. It is simply plugged in between the incoming LAN cable and the end device.
Remote Power Cycle
A brilliant side effect: Since the adapter is recognized by the switch as a valid 802.3af device, you can turn the switch port off and on via software (UniFi Controller). This allows you to reboot your 24V antenna on the roof without having to climb up there!
