How to Find Any Device on Your Network: IP Scanner Guide

Whether you are setting up a new WiFi Access Point, trying to access an IP camera, or configuring our Tinycontrol LAN Controller, you need the device's IP address to access its web interface in your browser.

Often, routers assign these addresses completely automatically via DHCP, leaving you guessing at which "number" your new device can be reached. We will show you how to easily find the dynamic or static IP address of any device.

Method 1: Check Your Router's Interface

The easiest way often leads through the command center of your network: your router. Log into your router's web interface and look for a menu item like "Home Network" or "Connected Devices". There you will usually find a list of all active devices along with their currently assigned IP addresses.

Method 2: Scanning with "Advanced IP Scanner"

If you don't have access to the router or want to scan the network quickly and in detail, we recommend an external tool. A free and extremely reliable method for Windows users is the program Advanced IP Scanner.

How to run the network scan:

  1. Run instead of install: Download the file and open it. You don't have to permanently install the program – simply choose the "Run" (Portable) option.
  2. Start the scan: Click the large green "Scan" button in the top left corner.
  3. Review results: The program will now search your entire IP range. After a few seconds, you will receive a clean list of all active devices.

Using the "Name" and "Manufacturer" (MAC address) columns, it is usually very easy to identify the devices you are looking for. Double-clicking on the found IP address often opens the device's web interface directly in your browser.

FAQ: IP Addresses on a Local Network

Why isn't my new device showing up in the IP scanner?

This can have several reasons: The device has not fully booted up yet, the network cable is faulty, or the device is on a completely different IP subnet than your PC.

Is Advanced IP Scanner available for Mac?

No, this specific tool is Windows-exclusive. However, Mac users can use free alternatives like LanScan or Angry IP Scanner.

What is the difference between a dynamic and static IP?

A dynamic IP is automatically assigned by your router (DHCP server) and can change after a reboot. A static IP is manually entered into the device – it always stays the same, which is highly recommended for servers or cameras.

Is there a smartphone app for this?

Yes, if you want to quickly scan your network with your phone, we recommend the free app Fing (available for iOS and Android). Your phone must be connected to the same WiFi network.
