Here is a step-by-step guide to configuring an ALFA Networks R36 or R36A router in combination with the popular ALFA Tube-U(N) outdoor USB receiver.

1. Connect Hardware and Select Target Network

Please connect the ALFA Tube to the USB port of the R36 while the device is turned off. Then, power it on, connect to the router via WiFi or cable, and open the web interface (usually 192.168.2.1).

  • In the Easy Setup menu of the ALFA R36, select "USB Wireless Adapter".
  • In the next window, click on "Site Survey".
  • Select the campground or marina network you want to connect to, and click "Select".
  • Click on "Next".

2. Secure Your Local WiFi Network

Now, we will configure the local WiFi network that the R36 will broadcast inside your RV or boat.

You can keep the network name as "ALFA_AP" or change it. For Security Mode, we highly recommend selecting "WPA2-PSK". Choose "AUTO" for the WPA Algorithm, and under Pass Phrase, enter a secure password (at least 8 characters). Complete the setup by clicking "DONE".

You can now connect your devices to your new, secured WiFi network.

3. Relocating: Connecting to a New WiFi

To connect to a different WiFi network at a new location, simply select "Change Profile" from the main menu, then click "Site Survey". Select the new network, enter the password in the Pass Phrase field if it’s encrypted, and click "SAVE" followed by "Activate/Save".

FAQ: ALFA R36 and Tube-U(N)

Why doesn’t it say "Connected" in the top right?

If the connection fails despite the correct password, go back to "Change Profile", re-enter the password, and try changing the "Network Type" from "Infrastructure" to "ad-hoc" (or vice versa), then click Save.

Is the Tube-U(N) weatherproof?

Yes, the Tube-U(N) is designed specifically for outdoor use. Just make sure the connection between the Tube and the antenna is properly sealed with weatherproofing tape.
