Only to a limited extent. For internet connections up to approx. 500-700 Mbit/s and simple Networks without complex firewall rules, the CPU performance may be sufficient. For faster Gigabit connections or intensive use of VPNs, a dedicated MikroTik Router is strongly recommended to avoid performance bottlenecks.
Which operating system should I use, SwOS or RouterOS?
If you only need pure Layer-2 Switching, SwOS is ideal and easy to operate via the web browser. However, if you require Routing functions, a detailed Firewall, or VPNs, RouterOS is the right choice. For maximum Switching performance, even in RouterOS, all ports should be configured in a single hardware-offloaded Bridge.
